Contextual English Vocabulary

Privacy Policy

Effective October 20, 2026

This policy explains how the Contextual English Vocabulary Chrome extension handles information when you use it.

Information the extension uses

When you choose Explain in English from the selection menu, the extension reads the word or phrase you selected and the surrounding text needed to identify its context. You can edit or paste a phrase and context in the side panel. It also uses your chosen translation language and the answer returned by Google Search. The extension does not continuously read webpages in the background.

How information is used and shared

To answer your lookup, the extension opens a temporary Google Search tab. The search query contains the phrase, context, and requested translation language, and is sent to Google over HTTPS. The extension reads the resulting AI Overview, if one is available, to show a definition, synonyms, example, and translation. It closes the temporary tab after the lookup or on failure. Google may handle the search under its own Privacy Policy.

The extension has no developer-operated server, analytics service, advertising integration, or vocabulary-history database. The developer does not receive your lookup text. The extension does not sell user data. If you choose Copy Markdown, it writes the displayed answer to your clipboard.

Storage and retention

The current lookup, including its phrase, context, search URL, and result, is stored in Chrome's session storage so the side panel can restore it during the browser session. A new lookup replaces the previous one. Your translation-language choice is stored in Chrome's local extension storage until you change it or remove the extension. This extension does not control any separate search history or records kept by Chrome or Google.

Your choices

You decide when to invoke the extension. Invoking it starts a search when page context is available; you can then edit the phrase or context to run another search. Avoid selecting or entering sensitive information that you do not want included in a Google Search query. You can change the saved language in the side panel. Removing the extension removes its locally stored extension data.

Changes and contact

If the extension's data practices change, this policy will be updated. For privacy questions, use the developer contact information on the extension's Chrome Web Store listing.
